DORRET BOOMSMA

Biological psychologist at VU University Amsterdam

Founder of the Netherlands Twin Register; focusses on twin and genetic studies of behaviour, health and psychopathology; has produced influential findings on the genetic basis of neuropsychiatric disorders.

KARL DEISSEROTH

Bioengineer, neuroscientist at Stanford University

Credited with developing neuroscience techniques, including optogenetics, which uses light to control cells such as neurons in living tissue, lauded as the most precise known method for studying the brain.

STEVEN P. GYGI

Cell biologist at Harvard Medical School

Develops and applies new technologies in mass spectrometry and proteomics (the large-scale study of proteins). Jointly credited for the BioPlex network, with 9,000 proteins the largest open access resource for studying protein interactions.

ALBERT HOFMAN

Epidemiologist at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

A world leader in the epidemiology of common neurologic and vascular diseases, such as dementia and stroke; author of influential studies on the role of vascular factors in Alzheimer’s disease.

NICHOLAS MARTIN

Geneticist at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Australia

Founder of the Australian Twin Registry; conducts genome-wide association studies to identify genes influencing complex traits; has developed analytical methods for gene-environment interactions.

ANDRES METSPALU

Geneticist, biotechnologist at University of Tartu

Director of the Estonian Genome Center at the University of Tartu; focusses on the genetic basis of complex diseases, the application of the precision medicine in healthcare, and the advance of DNA chip technology.

Timothy Spector, deCODE Genetics

TIMOTHY SPECTOR

Geneticist at King’s College, London

Director of the TwinsUK Registry and the British Gut microbiome project. Demonstrated the genetic basis of a wide range of common complex traits, and is among the top 1% most-cited scientists.

KÁRI STEFÁNSSON

Geneticist at the University of Iceland

Has published widely on the genetics of common and complex diseases and is a leading figure in the identification of genetic risk variants in the genome.

BO TANG

Chemist Shandong Normal University, China

Research on application of nanomaterials and molecular probes in biochemical analysis, clean synthesis of chemicals, and technologies for solar power generation and storage.
