Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) Thailand

Overview

Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) is a private, postgraduate-level university located at the heart of the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi) in Wangchan Valley, Rayong, Thailand. VISTEC strives towards world-class research excellence by creating advanced knowledge and cutting-edge innovation to address national demands and global challenges. Our mission is to become an internationally-recognised university; to foster passionate faculty and talented students; to actively pursue high-quality, high-impact, frontier research; and to enhance Thailand’s competitiveness via research and innovation for the sustainable development of the society.

Founded in 2015 by PTT PLC, Thailand’s leading energy company, VISTEC is designed to be autonomous and academically independent. This ensures that the institute can professionally and rigorously select outstanding faculty members, students, researchers, and staff as well as carry out independent research to achieve world-class academic excellence.

Our four schools have been established to focus on the four interdisciplinary areas of future key technologies.

  • Advanced materials – School of Molecular Science and Engineering (MSE)
  • Energy and environment – School of Energy Science and Engineering (ESE)
  • Biotechnology – School of Biomolecular Science and Engineering (BSE)
  • Digital technology – School of Information Science and Technology (IST)

Further, the Frontier Research Centre (FRC) has been created to provide state-of-the-art facilities and serve as the focal point for our research collaborations and utilisations with both academic and industrial partners from around the world.

Research Excellence

From the dedicated efforts of all our team members, within 5 years of our establishment VISTEC has achieved the premier status of ranking as Thailand’s No. 1 in All Sciences and Chemistry categories and No.2 in Life Sciences of Nature Index in 2020. We were also listed as the World’s No. 12 on Nature Index Top 30 Academic Institutions under 30 in 2018.

Our cutting-edge materials research programs emphasise on sustainability with real-world applications: advanced catalysts for cleaner, more efficient industrial processes and for converting CO2 to high value-added chemicals; stimuli-responsive nanomaterials with applications spanning from drug delivery to corrosion protection; self-healing materials; advanced adsorptive materials for cleaning up toxic wastes; organic-inorganic hybrid materials for energy devices and separation/purification membranes; and novel semiconductors for next-generation high-efficiency lighting and solar cells.

The strength of our materials research is highlighted by the establishment of two collaborative labs with world-renown partners on our campus. The Max Planck-VISTEC Partner Laboratory for Sustainable Materials is a joint research centre between the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany and VISTEC aiming at creating biomaterials and smart coatings from Thai natural bioresources. The Smart Materials Research Laboratory by VISTEC and Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS), Kyoto University, Japan, focuses on molecular-based electron/ion transport materials for energy applications.

VISTEC also encourages strong academic-industry partnerships. One example is our leading energy storage technology that receives generous funding through the triple helix model – university, government, and industry – for scaling up towards commercialisation. The Centre of Excellence for Energy Storage Technology (CEST) is one of ASEAN’s largest centres operated by a university for manufacturing innovative batteries and supercapacitors.

We leverage our core competency in biotechnology—particularly biocatalysis, directed evolution, and bioprocess engineering—to convert agricultural, industrial and food wastes to biochemicals and biofuels using our Integrated Zerowaste Bioconversion Technology. Our circular economy approaches are currently implemented at local community levels and will be scaled up to meet national demands and global challenges.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, VISTEC and collaborators deploy our synthetic biology expertise to develop and clinically validate a SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection platform based on CRISPR diagnostic technologies. Such a novel platform—which is quick, accurate, and does not need extensive instrumentation—can facilitate management and containment of COVID-19 and future emerging infectious diseases.

To drive the Thai society into the modern economy based on digital innovations, our informatics research programs encompass scalable data systems, computer vision, networking, robotics, and brain-computer interfaces. We apply our unique expertise to many industries in Thailand, digitising their operations with advanced automation and machine intelligence.

VISTEC is celebrating our 5th Anniversary in 2020. Despite our young age, we have demonstrated our capabilities and will continue the advancement of our mission to cultivate future leaders in science and technology, pioneer frontier research, and raise the competitiveness of Thailand through the creation of knowledge and innovations.

Countering catastrophic corrosion

A responsive multifunctional polymer coating can counter biocorrosion on metal structures such as powerplant pipelines and shipping infrastructure.

The biofouling of metal structures in fresh or sea water can greatly accelerate corrosion. The related cost to industry reaches up to US$50 billion dollars annually. Coatings to minimize biofouling are therefore typically used.

Now, four researchers at Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology in Thailand and a collaborator have developed an adaptive polymer coating that can counter corrosion as well as biofouling.

The polymer backbone is decorated with fluorinated side chains and the corrosion-inhibiting molecule MBT, which is attached by cleavable disulfide linkages. The fluorinated units create a form of non-stick surface that prevents fouling algae from attaching to surfaces. The MBT adds a second line of defence. It acts as a biocide, but is also cleaved from the polymer in a corrosion-reducing environment, functioning as a controlled-release corrosion inhibitor.
