Tackling China’s Challenges through Science and Technology
A newly established university, ShanghaiTech University offers a stimulating environment for pursuing studies and impactful research
Officially opened on September 30th 2013, ShanghaiTech University is a research university jointly established by the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
Addressing pressing challenges
ShanghaiTech is dedicated to be a research university of academic excellence and a dynamic people centered hub where innovative research, education, and community service meet to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to learning and to solving global challenges.
Located in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, ShanghaiTech is close to various industries and venture companies. It is also near several large science facilities, including the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the National Facility of Protein Science in Shanghai, the National Drug Screening Platform and the Shanghai Center for Microsatellites. Over 700,000 square meters in area, its campus was designed to be faculty and student oriented and to facilitate interaction and integration.
Focusing on science and technology, ShanghaiTech University comprises six schools — the School of Physical Science and Technology (SPST), the School of Information Science and Technology (SIST), the School of Life Science and Technology (SLST), the School of Biochemical Engineering(BME), the School of Entrepreneurship and Management (SEM), and the School of Creativity and Art (SCA) — and four research institutes — the Shanghai Institute for Advanced Immunochemical Studies (SIAIS), the iHuman Institute, and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Institute of Humanities.
Investing in people
The university is forming a top-tier faculty of 1,000 professors, including 500 tenured or tenure-track faculty (recruited globally) and 500 distinguished professors-in-residence from CAS or other prestigious universities or institutes. ShanghaiTech’s innovative university-wide tenure-track system attracts talented faculty with a wealth of experience from around the world. 17% are foreign nationals and almost 80% of the faculty earned their PhD abroad. 240 are tenured or tenure-track (and 28 more have accepted offers), while another 287 are adjunct professors. The current faculty (535 by Nov 2020) include five Nobel laureates, eleven National Academy of Sciences (USA) members, three Royal Society (UK) fellows, thirty-three CAS members and three Chinese Academy of Engineering members.
ShanghaiTech offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. It will eventually have 2,000 undergraduate students and 4,000 graduate students (including 3,000 PhD candidates). Currently there are 1632 undergraduate students and 2798 graduate students (including 886 PhD candidates) on campus (by Nov 2020).
ShanghaiTech aims to nurture future leading scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs. At ShanghaiTech, residential colleges work closely with schools to foster students’ moral integrity, academic capabilities and innovative spirit. Students are encouraged to investigate the challenges China faces, to explore cutting-edge research areas and high-tech industries, and to implement their innovative and entrepreneurial ideas.
Advancing research through collaboration
By encouraging an interdisciplinary approach and the integration of university and national research facilities, the university aims to form a complete innovation value chain, which will drive industrial development through the advancement of science.
ShanghaiTech is an interdisciplinary research-focused institution with 268 research groups. In 2019 professors and students published 4541 research papers released in Nature, Cell, Science and other academic journals and conferences. To date, 337 patents and 74 PCT applications have been applied for.
69 student clubs engage students in science, art, culture, sports and community service. Several clubs have earned regional and international awards and honors, including Geek Pie, which won more than ten awards in 2018, including gold medal in KONE Hackpic Game and silver in the ASC World Supercomputer Contest. The women’s varsity basketball team won second place in 3-on-3 match at the 16th Shanghai Games.
ShanghaiTech is actively engaged in the globalization of education. It has extensive collaborations with University of California, Berkeley, the University of Chicago, MIT, Yale University, Harvard University, and the University of Padova. To break down barriers between research and industry, ShanghaiTech collaborates closely with domestic and international high-tech companies in joint research and development and student training.

CAR trafficking improved

A new way of engineering T cells to selectively attack tumours makes boosts the anti-cancer activity of these therapeutic cells in mice and also makes them last longer.
A team co-led by scientists at ShanghaiTech University showed that chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) — constructs designed to redirect the immune responses of cells to proteins expressed by tumours — regularly traffic from the outside of resting T cells, to the inside, and back to the surface again.
However, the long-term cancer-fighting ability of CAR-bearing T cells is limited because when they engage their targets on tumour cells, they get tagged for destruction. To prevent this from happening, the researchers mutated parts of the CAR. When added to T cells, the resulting ‘recyclable CAR’ proved more durable in tumour-bearing mice than standard CARs.
The same concept could enhance the persistence and functionality of CAR-bearing T cells used clinically for treating patients.
