Overcoming the blues for OLEDs

A new approach for producing efficient and stable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that emit a pure blue has been demonstrated.

OLEDs are promising for use in eco-friendly lighting sources and full-colour displays. However, just as it was for conventional LEDs, blue is proving to be a bottleneck for OLEDs. In particular, it has been difficult to make blue OLEDs that stably emit a pure blue while having long lifetimes and high efficiencies.

Now, seven researchers at Kyushu University in Japan and a collaborator have a demonstrated strategy that overcomes these challenges that involves splitting the energy conversion and light emission processes between two organic molecules. This approach has the added advantage of not needing to use expensive metals.

The researchers are confident that with further optimization their blue OLEDs will be able to replace current commercial ones in high-definition displays.
